“Your surfing can get better on every turn, on every wave you catch. Learn to read the ocean better.”
Traditionally fishermen’s village, with a deep connection and tradition to the ocean, Ericeira, with its own independent character and individual personality captures your attention like the steep cliffs capture the waves.
If you have already seen McNamara breaking the Big Wave World Record, then you do know what I’m gonna be talking about. If not, take a deep breath and follow the instructions.
I’m not yet a surfer myself but I witnessed some great ones on the route following the sea north of Lisbon. At the fishing village, traditionally linked to the sea, which has been recognized as one of the world’s surfing reserves, Ericeira I came close to the surfing culture.
Watch the pros charging the most breathtaking waves in the world, let yourself free to discover little known breaks, find yourself mesmerized on the top of a rocky cliff. Well, the ocean definitely needs respect above all and a great spirit of freedom. Ericeira, is a special refugee for surfers and boarders of any kind. This small village in the Portuguese municipality of Mafra, hosts world championships such as the ASP World Tour and Quicksilver PRO Portugal.

7 kilometers between this break spot and the center of the little village, lies Praia Sao Lourenco.
This is not the ideal spot for beginners since the reef breaks with multiple peaks with the most consistent a right hand on the right beach. Sounds tough and pretty accurate, so slow and long waves work well with big swells. Here you go! I’m getting into the water..
The waves go up to 2 meters high. Still Wow!
RIBEIRA D ILHAS
Lat.: 39° 19.354′ N
Lon.: 9° 21.548′ W
3.5 km away from the traditional village of Ericeira and right next by “Ribheira d’ Ilhas,” the River mouth, lays one of the best European destinations both for surfing and bodyboarding.
As experts put it, this is a “world class break” not to be missed by genuine lovers. For the last ten years, one of the most important global surfing championship events, the ASP is being hosted at this spot.
It’s the most accessible reef break. Can get heavy with a big swell but that’s all right if you get to compare it with some stiffer spots! It’s good to know before you get into those waters. Medium Surfers you could make a respectable effort into this sea. Consistently red right hand for the Peaky Blinders, right hand for the break!
Waves can get 3 meters high! Coolness indeed!
Lat.: 39° 0.035′ N
Lon.: 9° 25.615′ W
Quite small spot, without eyes to watch your wet steps, can get really interesting for surf dudes and rather an adventure for bathers!
This is said to be the perfect right hand point break where tunnels and barrels can be developed. Definitely doesn’t sound like an easy beach to hang around. You are getting yourself importantly wet.
The waves go up to 3 meters high. Coolness!
Lat: 39° 22.455′ N
Lon: 9° 20.15′ W

PRAIA DO SUL

Lon.: 9° 21.68′ W
When the ocean wakes up “big” head to Sul to can find some fat and long strong waves to please your appetite. Not much, but when everything else fails you always have an opportunity around Ericeira.
FOZ DO LIZANDRO

A cool beach for all tribes. Casual bathers in search of the summer sun, promising kids on a bodyboard, beginners full of passion and professionals who know the ocean by second, all in the same spot in the same time find their place. Cool combination of a beach that has it all.
