The Landscape

Lemnos is a greek island, in the northern part of the Aegean, celebrating peace, serenity and simplicity.

The landscape of the island, resemble the locations of the most poetic films that gently deal with time, space and being.

Balance, and simplicity is what the island truly radiates.

This is how I feel.

Terra Sigillata

Terra Sigillata is a term with at least three distinct meanings: as a description of medieval medicinal earth;

I won’t get into any medical details, my point is that Earth, for the people of Lemnos, has always been considered as sacred.

Terra sigillata translates quite literally as sealed earth and plays a significant role in the history of ceramics.

Sealed stands for a very thin slip, lightly brushed onto pots to seal them when fired, no glaze afterwards, but also refers to stamping, as the pottery in the ancient times was heavily decorated with a stamp design both in Greece and Italy.

The colour of “terra sigillata” is red brown and you can find it as Number 43 in the global colour atlas, under the name Terra Lemnia.

I am not a foodie reporter, though I am a tradition aficionado and Flomaria pasta is a specialty from the island of Lemnos, i am extremely happy to have met!

Cut into very fine pieces, produced with local ingredients, flour, eggs and sheep milk.

Once upon a time the kneading, the opening and the cutting of flomaria were celebrated among housewives and friends.

The best period to make them is during summertime, to let them breathe and properly dry before storing them to provide hearty meals during wintertime.

Ok. Let’s say that what you eat here is better than the view you have right in the very front of you, i believe there is nothing left to say. Do not expect the food to be served, on GoSeeLeave. You have to go see with your own eyes and taste with your same lips!

Athina is the mastermind, the master chef, the sweetest of them all.

The desert

Find in Lemnos the only European desert.

Yup! You’ve read desert.

On the north side of Lemnos, in the village Gomati, we witness a unique and unexpected sight, a small desert. The 7 hectare area is located away from the sea and has fully dynamic dunes, influenced by the direction of the wind.

Listen to this! There grow white lilies in this desert!

The Sunset

Slowly the west reaches for clothes of new colors  which it passes to a row of ancient trees. You look,
and soon these two worlds both leave you,
one part climbs toward heaven, one sinks to earth, leaving you, not really belonging to either,
not so hopelessly dark as that house that is silent,  not so unswervingly given to the eternal as that thing that turns to a star each night and climbs-
leaving you (it is impossible to untangle the threads) your own life,
timid and standing high and growing, so that, sometimes blocked in,
sometimes reaching out, one moment your life is a stone in you, and the next, a star.

“Sunset”, by Rainer Maria Rilke
